Hobart Brown Owls gather again - but what should we do?

Our little parliament of owls is meeting again in Taroona after skipping our last meeting.

We know this is a duck, but it's outside where we meet, so just pretend, OK?

The scheduled February meeting was (I think) our hottest day this summer, so we all went inside our little bird boxes and wilted (well, I did anyway...).

So far our group has been kind of feeling it's way a little bit - we have had 6 gatherings so far and we have been getting to know each other and working out when we can make it and what we do and what we make and all that jazz.  Now some of us were thinking it is time to get a bit of focus going for the group.

We already learn from each other - last time we met I learned that a machine I had decided should be invented, was already in existence (a yarn ball spinner thing...yes, I am a noob at some stuff...); but maybe now we take an idea from many other groups and do some team activity of some kind.  I am guessing charity, but who knows?  We have a pregnant owl, so perhaps our first team effort should be focused on the impending smallest one?  Or maybe we make some stuff to sell to buy other people sewing machines via kiva?  Or perhaps we make stuff to give directly to someone; in the Softies for Mirabel vein?  I know this is seasonal, but we might take a while to be organised :)  Or maybe something more locally inspired - such as the Alannah and Madeline foundation buddy bags.

Anyway - we meet, we talk, we decide.  Maybe.  Advice from other groups who have organised such efforts is most welcome!   Our group is here if you want to join us - looking forward to some crafty goodness on Saturday :)

Canberra Brown Owls - I’M SHRINKING!

From etsy seller Cooccachoo

And you can too! This Sunday, 18 March the Canberra Brown Owls will be using shrink plastic to make, well, whatever you’d like! There are plenty of tutorials and ideas around if you google ‘shrinky dink’ or poly shrink, and of course Pinterest and Flickr have heaps of inspiration too!
We’ll have the shrink plastic sheets for purchase at cost and some permanent markers, a hole punch and a light-box available for use.
What to bring
  • You’ll need an image or idea of what you’d like to do with your shrinky, and if you want special colours then you can bring your own permanent markers. If you plan to make a brooch or pendant then you’ll need findings and adhesive. I believe you can also use some stamps/pencils on the plastic – but we’ve not tested it and can’t endorse that approach!
  • $5 for room hire and a couple of dollars for shrink paper.
  • A plate of something to share if you’d like.
Where
Downer Community Centre
When
Sunday March 18 from 1pm – 3.30pm

RSVP in the comments so we know you're coming!

Brown Owls Melbourne 3000 - March gathering report

Lovely lovely to see you all. Didnt we have a lovely time. At Melb 3000 gathering this Tuesday just gone.

Books were much enjoyed - I'd thought I'd give you a run down and share some titles:

Lee bought along - A Stitch in Time vol 1 & 2, Jane Waller & Susan Crawford
Jennie bought along - Crochet, Modern Vintage, by Panda (it was advertised in Frankie recently, i spotted it there, but it was super to see it in real life, there is an AMAZING little top in there - I want it!)
Kimmy bought along - Vintage Knitting, Claire Montgomerie (currently available for $5, yes $5! in the cheap bookshop on Collins Street near the junction with Swanston - quick! while theres still some left)
Me, I bought along - Urban Knits and Knitted Icons (including how-to knit your own Gandhi!), but I forgot to write the authors down and now I've lent them to people - doh!
Linda bought along - Surrur, Make your own Marimekko, Mari Saiso & Kati Rapia as well as Made in France, Agnes Delage-Calvet & Friends
Jenny bought along - some knitting and cross stitch patterns
Gina bought along - the classic that we all love, Pip's first book 'Meet me at Mikes'
Anna and Paula and Sarah were there too - i think they liked the books too.

Super books ladies - thanks, it was lovely to share.

And rabbit action..... Lee wore crocheted ears that were super cute, Kimmy wins the prize for being most industrious as she made a whole rabbit in one session, very gorgeous felt bunny of practical pinny cushion application and Chloe made the top of a rabbits head - super! A bunny for the bun(ny) thats in her oven! Hoorah!

No meet in April, but see you in May! unless, from Paula's pleas (she has a scarf to finish and goes overseas super soon), I get myself into gear and find us a suitable alternative city venue for an impromptu April gathering - will let you know if this transpires.

See you sooooooooon

Sue x
