Brisbane Owls: Crochet Washcloths and Granny Squares

Brisbane Owls: It's time to RSVP for our first meet up of 2012!

Date: Saturday 25 February 2012

Time: 10:30am - 12:30pm

Venue: Meeting Room, New Farm Library, 135 Sydney Street, New Farm.

Craft-along Project: Crochet Washcloths and Granny Squares

Crochet Washcloths for Beginners

Sam holds the record of being able to teach anyone to crochet in under 2 hours so if you've never picked up a crochet hook before and have always wanted to this is your chance to kick off your crochet addiction with a sweet little washcloth.

Bring a new size 4.5 or old size 7 crochet hook and some 8ply crochet cotton (Lincraft usually has a good supply of this for cheap) or yarn of choice, just make sure it's washable so you can suds it up and enjoy the end result! We will have a limited supply of crochet hooks and yarn available if you prefer to practice first before investing in your own yarn and hook.

Crochet Granny Squares

Already know the basics of crochet but yet to master the infamous granny square? Rebecca will guide you through a basic granny square, once you get the hang of it you won't believe how easy it is!

Bring the yarn of your choice and crochet hook to suit your yarn, you can work in one colour or as many colours as you like. Check the label on your yarn for the hook size required. If you're not sure ask your local craft store or email us at brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com. We will have a limited supply of crochet hooks and yarn available if you prefer to practice first before investing in your own yarn and hook.

  1. Cool! I have a number of unfinished crotched rugs that seem to get wonkier as they get bigger! I'd like to learn how to do flowers too! I'll check the date... hope I'm free :)

  5. I think that I might be the one failure against Sam's record actually (reflection on me, not Sam!), but would like to have another go - just need to see about the timing.

Rach, could you shoot us an email to brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com and we'll do a call out to those who have rsvp'd to see if there is anyone in your area (I can't seem to find a way to contact you, sorry).

Dani, yes it's totally fine to bring your little owl, there's always at least one bub if not more in the room :)

Pam, totally fine to do both grannies and your own thing!

Megan, HUGE thank you, that would be so wonderful if you could give us a hand with teaching both the basics and grannies, yay!

  18. Hi there

I am keen to come along to this. I have registered my email with you before, my name is Rebecca. If I could borrow a hook on the day that would be great.

  19. Oh it's so cute to see all the ladies crocheting together I'd love to belong to a social group and learn to make flowers, bags and special styles.
In the past people had grannies or mom's to teach them, but now my gran is too old to teach me, but I've crocheted a little orange square and turned it into a cell phone pouch so she can wear her Tracfone SVC phone for seniors with big buttons and letters on the screen round her neck.
I live in Miami and there is a chain of shops called 'Anthropology' which is like a shique country shop where they have put a modern edge to crocheted blankets with all sizes of flowers randomly spread over the blanky, and they sell crocheted tops and mini dresses. Wow it's no wonder the younger generation are picking up crocheting, it seems like the new generation are enjoying the wholesomeness, romance and therapeutic feelings you get when crocheting.

  22. Going through my notes and scribbles from yesterday's BrisStyle creative development session and so glad I found Brown Owls!
Would absolutely love to join you on the 25th and get to know all you lovely people and maybe finish a granny square baby blanket that has been sitting on the "work in progress" basket on a corner of my craft room ;)
