Wool for Women update - from Melbourne 3000 Owl, Stacey

Hi, Sue here from Melb 3000 owls, Stacey has asked that I forward this wonderful update to you all - she'll be there at our gathering tonight - look forward to seeing you then! Sue x

Wool for Women Update

Thanks to the support of the Melbourne community, especially those at Brown Owls 3000, Aware’s Wool for Women project in Cambodia was a huge success!

June’s workshops in Kampot were amazing. The women picked up the skills really well were overwhelmed by the amount of beautiful wool we were able to bring over with us.

Hanna Guy, the director of Dorsu (the social enterprise we partnered with) wished me to share the following comments with you all.

Aware's time at Dorsu was a wonderful success and we are greatlyappreciative. The approach towards the program, encouraging creativity and self-expression while learning, really allowed the team to enjoy theAware workshops. The new products are selling well and our staff arealready excited to continue working with Aware next time.

Please extend our thanks to the donors of wool and supplies, as these are unavailable in Cambodia and we could not be introducing crochet products into our range without their support. Thank you

Our continued support to Dorsu includes periodic wool drives, we are currently collecting wool to be sent over in late August, especially 12 ply. If you can help at all, please contact stacey.aware@gmail.com.

On the back of the project we are also holding crochet classes, as a fun way to fundraise for Aware projects, lesson fees will be a small donation to Aware. Classes will be held in Northcote, starting in August, and I’d be happy to share the poster with you guys if you have friends interested in learning.

Brisbane: Four projects over four meet ups!

To wrap up the Winter crafting season we have four big crochet and knitting projects over four meet ups! Choose from any of the following projects at any of the next four meet ups!

Crochet flowers
Once you get the hang of these cuties, you'll be pumping them out in no time! Beginners should start with 8ply yarn and 4-4.5 mm hook and then work you're way down to crochet cotton.
What to bring: Choose the yarn or crochet cotton you'd like to work with and corresponding hook (check the yarn/wool/cotton label for appropriate hook size). If you're not sure email us at brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com or we'll have yarn and hooks available on the day if you prefer to have a go first before investing in your own.

Crochet beanies
If you've mastered the granny square you'll be hooked on beanies in no time!
What to bring: 100 grams 8ply yarn/wool and a 4mm crochet hook (or check the yarn/wool label for the appropriate size hook). We have plenty of hooks and yarn to use on the day if you prefer to try it out before investing in your own.

Granny squares
If you've missed previous crochet meet ups this is your chance to perfect the granny!
What to bring: Absolute beginners should start with an 8ply yarn and 4-4.5mm hook. If you've had a few goes at the granny you could have a shot at making tiny granny squares with crochet cotton and corresponding hook listed on the cotton label. We will have yarn and hooks of all sizes if you prefer to have a go before investing in your own.

Born to Knit
Don't know how to knit? This is a great project to learn!
It's not too late to join in on this awesome knitting campaign. The Born to Knit campaign asks supporters to knit woollen blankets and squares for vulnerable children. Their aim this year is 6,500 beautiful, warm blankets.Through their programs in Australia and in countries such as Laos and Cambodia, all knitted blankets donated to the Born to Knit campaign will make their way into the arms of caring mothers. Have a go at making a square to contribute to a blanket!
What to bring: 8ply 100% pure wool. 4mm needles (we have lots of needles you can loan from Brown Owls if you're knitting for the campaign). We also have a few squares on the go if you'd like to pop in and continue knitting them. Squares can be dropped off at any Brown Owls meet ups between now and September.

Canberra July - learn to embroider!

Hi owls!

Not long to go now until our July meeting!
We're meeting on Sunday July 22 at 1:30pm at the Downer Community Centre and we'd like to invite you all to come and learn how to do embroidery!
We'll be using this ace sampler tutorial to practise 6 different embroidery stitches!

To make a cute pin cushion, you'll need to bring along:
  • A copy of the sampler pattern - you can print it out here
  • A piece of fabric to embroider on. Make sure it is a bit bigger than you want your finished pin cushion to be - you'll trim it down once it the embroidery is done. The tutorial recommends a 6"x6" piece for a 3"x3" cushion.
  • Backing fabric for your pin cushion - this should be just a bit bigger than you want your finished cushion to be (to allow for seams)
  • A fabric marker
  • Needle
  • Embroidery floss
  • A button or any other embellishment you'd like to use
  • Stuffing
We'll have some extra supplies on hand, but it is super important that you let us know in the comments when you RSVP if you will need anything - so we can make sure that there is enough to go around =)

As always, everyone is welcome - so if embroidery just isn't your thing, or if you have another project on the go that you just can't put down, please join us and bring along anything you'd like to work on!

Please RSVP in the comments so that we know how many owls to plan for!
And don't forget to bring along $5 for room hire, something for afternoon tea if you would like, and of course any show and tell you'd like to share! =)

Please get in touch by email or through the comments below if you have any questions!
(please remember to leave us your contact details in the comments so we can get back to you if you would like!)

Hope to see everyone soon!

xo Bron, on behalf of the Canberra Prefects

ps. Don't forget to save the date for our August meeting - on Sunday August 19 Renae from Suzy Hausfrau will be teaching us to crochet granny squares!

Bayside Brown Owls {Meeting Wrap}

A HUGE thank you to Bargain Box Fabrics in Mornington for hosting the 2nd meeting of Bayside Brown Owls last night! We all had a really great time and walked away feeling all inspired to create something fantastic to bring in next month!

The mini tutorial last night was 'How to Make Granny Squares' which (in all honesty) was probably a bit too ambitious for everyone who had never held a crochet hook before! However, in saying that, I have uploaded the tutorial in my ISSUU library if you want to download a copy and practice at home! I've also attached the link to the Crochet Pocket Guide that was created to help you all learn the difference between American and British crochet terminology so I hope you find it helpful. Just click on the image to the right.

Our next meeting will be on MONDAY 6th AUGUST back at Bagain Box Fabrics so make sure you stick it on your calendar and come along! As mentioned, if you have any ideas for future mini tutorials please make your suggestions on our Facebook page!

Please feel free to invite anyone along you know who might enjoy a night out with fellow crafters. There is no skill level or age restriction! Don't forget to bring your craft along and PLEASE feel free to post photos on our facebook page of your latest projects so we can all 'Ooooh' and 'Ahhhh!'
