Hobart Brown Owls October Gathering

Calling all Hobartians! We'd love to see you along to our October Gathering THIS SATURDAY!! Bring along any projects you are working on, or start something new! Perhaps you might like to make a Softie for Mirabel? Or learn something completely new and exciting! We have people who can sew, knit, embroider, crochet, spin, felt, print, dye etc. in our midst, so bring along the tools and ask for a hand if you'd like to learn a new skill!

Where: The little cottage in the playground, Batchelor Way, Taroona.
When: 1.30-4.30pm
Here's what is supplied: A kettle, tea, milk, honey and sugar...

Here's what you need to bring: Something crafty to work on, a cup to drink from, special drinks if you like (soy milk, coffee, super fancy tea...), and maybe a plate of afternoon tea to share? Some gluten free options would be welcome, I'm sure.

We'll need a contribution of $2, to cover venue hire. Any surplus funds will be put into a kitty to cover weeks where attendance is low. The hall has been booked for the last Saturday of each month.
We have booked 3hrs which should allow time for settling in and packing up as well as lots of time to chat and craft. Children are welcome, so long as they don't hinder the creative crafty time of other members. There is ample playground space for them to wander safely :)

See you then! xx

PS. You can find us here if you'd like to find out more

Preston Brown Owls Meeting

Maybe it was the knitting, maybe it was the company or maybe it was the brownie but I completely forgot to take any photos of our October meeting!

So imagine if you will, the round table at Pearl Oyster, teacups, cake plates and hives of industry. Keti, fabulously pregnant with only seven weeks to go, was crocheting up a storm on her second baby blanket, this one a homage to her beloved's football team.

Ann-Margaret was working away on blue/gray garter scarf with stripey ribbon yarn ends. By the time she left, she was but a telly episode away from FINISHING! Just in time for next winter.

Kathryn reached the armholes on her ribbed sweater and I was plodding through cables and slip stitches for a cardigan that will also be ready for next winter.

Holly brought a magic carpet of mending, transporting us all back about thirtyish years, with her patched restoration of the family Puggle.

The instant I saw it, I was back in Toyworld in Karingal Hub Shopping Centre in some sort of forest scene set up, loads of Puggles and a lot of thwarted desire. I never got one and forgot them entirely until Brown Owls Meet.

Our next regular meeting is

Sunday November 20 2-4pm
Pearl Oyster 114 Miller St, Preston
free but buy a cuppa for the Pearl

reply in comments or email me if you are coming

We also have an extra special meeting coming up at GJs Discount Fabric store in Brunswick for those of you who love your sewing machines or who wish to love a sewing machine. Check out their shop http://www.gjsdiscountfabrics.com.au/.
Here are the details for our meeting

Saturday November 5 12.30 - 3.45pm
GJs Fabrics 443 Lygon Street, Brunswick
$5.00
reply in comments or email me if you haven't let me know already

We will be meeting in the upstairs sewing room at GJ's - it is light and airy and has lots of tables and even tea and coffee stuff. If you are coming you need to bring your own sewing machine if you have one. BYO sewing project and materials are available to purchase downstairs in the fabric shop. I will be running a little tutorial on making a zip purse.

If you would like to make one of these you will need
  • 16cm-17cm skirt zip
  • approximately 2 x 20cm square piece of cotton fabric for the outside
  • approximately 2 x 20cm square piece of cotton fabric for the lining

Please bring all your own scissors, pins etc for your projects if you have them - I will bring stuff for beginners.

See you soon

Canberra Brown Owls Freezer Paper stencils

Charger

It's stencil time again!

*Please note this month's meeting is on SUNDAY, not Saturday. The DCC have double booked us so we have had to change to Sunday 23 October.

You'll need to bring:
  • a photocopy/printout of a design you want to stencil,
  • something you want to stencil on to (t-shirt, tea towel, fabric),
  • a pencil for tracing the design on to the freezer paper,
  • an exacto or paper cutting knife, and
  • a plastic lid or some kind of paint palette
For the princely sum of $3 we can provide you with a 50cm length of freezer paper, and access to fabric medium, paint (black, white, red, blue and yellow) and brushes. If you're a quilter you may already have access to your own freezer paper, or you can bring your own paints. You can buy a piece of freezer paper for $1, or some fabric medium (turns regular paint into fabric paint) for $1. Let us know if the comments if you want a the 'package' or just freezer paper.

Here are some great places to start looking for a stencil or for a bit of information about the process. Best to try something simple to start with.

Adelaide Brown Owls - Important update!

Just a quick update to let you all know that there wont be a Brown Owls meet up this week. School holidays have conspired to make all of the organisers (and quite a few of the participants!) disappear so we've had to cancel this weeks meet up.  Please accept this picture of a sad kitten as our apology.

Regards,

Melissa.

Southside Owls ~ Thursday 13th October ~ GOCCO!

Hello!

We are going to do a GOCCO demo this month at Southside Brown Owls!

I first saw a gocco in action when Pip did a demo at Fitzroy Brown Owls in 2009 and was instantly hooked. I bought a gocco on ebay about a week later where it has dutifully sat in it's box since. That is until last weekend when Jess, fellow Southside Owl and a gocco veteran, gave me the low down. It's so easy and so much fun. Mine is going to get such a workout now that I've dusted off the box.

Jess and I will be doing a demo on how to use gocco, and everyone will get to have a go at printing!

We will have two goccos and a few different screens/designs you can print from on the night, including one of Jess's sweet illustrations and the bunting above (would make a great christmas card!)

Date: Thursday 13th October
Time: 7:30pm
Venue: Miss Jackson, 2/19 Grey Street St. Kilda (through the big rusty gate)
Close to the #16, #96 and #122 trams, and parking below

What to bring:
We will have some papery things you can use to print on, but it would be a good idea to bring along some of your own as well. Here are some ideas:
* blank cards
* blank postcards
* envelopes
* paper bags
* lolly bags
* gift bags
* noodle boxes
* stickers
* front cover of notebooks e.g. moleskine
* old book pages

The gocco print size is B6 (125mm x 176mm) so make sure your papery things are at least that big to fit the image on, and not too much bigger that A5 (148mm x 210mm) so they fit in the gocco.

And bring along a BYO project as well to keep your hands busy in between printing!!

Sweeties: We will have tea, wine and baked goodies, feel free to bring something along if you would like to show off your baking skills!

RSVP: In the comments below if you'd like to come along! Please do!!

If you have any questions feel free to email or tweet me.

See you all next week!!

:: Brown Owls 3000 :: About Last Night...

Sue, the lovely leader of the 3000 Brown Owls was ill yesterday, so Shannon (of Miss Jackson and the Southside Brown Owls chapter) and I took the helm of the Madame Brussels posse, offering ourselves up as slightly less fabulous Sue-replacements.

There were a heap of ladies in attendance.  There was a lot of crochet and Pippy Slippering going on.  And there were tons of other crafty activities on various laps as well.

I drank a Bloody Mary which kept scattering chili about the place and somehow lost its celery stick in a pot plant.  Shannon drank a Martini and snacked on parfait of the non-sweet variety. There were many other snack and sippers, including Tess McCabe, Sarah, Jen, Linda, Kitty and MORE!  I do not know all their names, but their faces were lovely.

 I showed off a bit and taught a few beginners how to get going with their hooks.  Shannon was a lovely hostess, and chatted beguilingly to the crafters on the middle table.  And we thought a lot about the missing Sue, tucked up in her sick bed.  Get well Sue-n!

Thanks to everyone who came along and a big thanks to Sue for continuing to run this group (and indeed for inventing the Mme Brussels chapter!)

xx Pip
