Canberra Brown Owls: Spring means Stencilling!

It's stencil time again!

Come Spring we love to roll out the freezer paper stencilling. It’s always one of our most popular meets!

 Image from here

You'll need to bring:
  • a photocopy/printout of a design you want to stencil,
  • something you want to stencil on to (t-shirt, tea towel, fabric),
  • a pencil for tracing the design on to the freezer paper,
  • an exacto or paper cutting knife (and a cutting mat if you have one), and
  • a plastic lid or some kind of paint palette
For the princely sum of $3 we can provide you with a 50cm length of freezer paper, and access to fabric medium, paint (black, white, red, blue and yellow) and brushes. If you're a quilter you may already have access to your own freezer paper, or you can bring your own paints. You can buy a piece of freezer paper for $1, or some fabric medium (turns regular paint into fabric paint) for $1. Let us know if the comments if you want a 'package' or just freezer paper.

Here are some great places to start looking for a stencil or for a bit of information about the process. Best to try something simple to start with.

And try using the image function to search Google for possible stencil images too. And don’t forget Pinterest – a great source of inspiration!

Look forward to seeing you there - Sunday 21 October at 1.30 pm at the Downer Community Centre. Leave your RSVP or any questions in the comments, and let us know if you need supplies. Don't forget - $5 for the room hire and a plate of something yummy to share if you're so inclined!

Craft: HEXIES / English paper piecing!! BYO is always welcome!

Now, I have to admit I am not conversant in the language of hexies, I'll be a total newbie on the night so please forgive me if I haven't got the lingo spot on!

A few of our lovely owlies have offered to help out on the night and they have experience with both the glueing and sewing methods ~ so you can do whichever you would prefer

You can download a free 1" hexie template here ~ which is a good size to start with
We would recommend printing and cutting some out before you come along, in slightly thicker paper than normal ~ I'll bring along some extras cut out and ready to go in case anyone forgets ~ you can also buy hexagon papers from Amitie or Spotlight
We will also have copies of a cute hexie flower brooch pattern as well you can try

And here are a couple of tutorials that you might find useful:
Miss Print ~ quilt as you go hexie coaster
Chasing Cottons ~ hexies 101 part 1 and part 2

If you'd like to join in here's a list of supplies/equipment to bring along:
~ fabric scraps
~ thread in a light/natural colour ~ polyester is best but cotton will work fine too
~ sewing needle ~ straw/milliners size 10 or 11 are recommended
~ scissors

Goodies: We will provide provide wine and tea, please feel free to show off any baking prowess!
RSVP: Add a comment to let us know you are coming along!  Feel free to email me or tweet me with any questions.
