It's time to kick of 2014 in a big way! I am very excited to announce that Brisbane Brown Owls will be producing
Brisbane City Council's Art Bites program of workshops for the BrisAsia Festival!
A group of incredibly talented workshop facilitators have been hand
selected to deliver a diverse program of Asian-themed workshops in
February and March!
Thanks to Brisbane City Council all workshops are
free and include materials and equipment.
Please note that RSVPs are absolutely essential by emailing brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com. Get in asap, we all know how quickly these will fill up!

BrisAsia Festival Art Bites Workshop Program

Kanzashi Flowers with Melanie Gray Augustin
Traditionally, ‘Tsumami Kanzashi’ are delicate little flowers made from a
fine silk crepe and formed together to create amazing Geisha hairpieces
in Japan. Using the same technique participants will make their own
kanzashi flower from antique kimono silks to be worn as a brooch or hair
pin.

Contemporary Jewellery with Liana Kabel
Learn jewellery making techniques from master crafter Liana Kabel and
create your own fabulous design. This contemporary jewellery workshop
will incorporate materials from Japan and China, including papers, washi
tape and chop sticks.

Ningyogami: Japanese paper dolls with Melanie Gray Augustin
Learn to make a Japanese paper doll using traditional papers and folding
techniques. Ningyogami can be used as bookmarks or to adorn cards.

Paper Lanterns with Felicity Clarke
Participants will be introduced to paper cutting to create one or two
styles of traditional Asian paper lanterns. Each lantern is created in
paper with stylized, Asian-inspired imagery. The more advanced lantern
can hold a small candle as is traditional.

A 'make and take' origami workshop for children to learn the basics of

Stab-bound books with Tricia Smout
Make interesting books using a traditional Japanese book binding
technique – great for storing your photos or recording your thoughts.

Sashiko with Rebecca Cason
Sashiko is a traditional Japanese stitch originally used for mending
clothes and quilting. Participants will stitch a basic sashiko design
that can be made into a purse, placemat, wall hanging or form part of a
quilt.

Loom weaving with Rebecca Cason
Loom weaving is an ancient craft practised in many cultures across Asia
and the Middle East. This workshop will go through the basics of loom
weaving on cardboard so you can try before you buy your own loom or
learn cost effective ways to make a loom of your own. Weave any shape
and any size textile from teeny tiny brooches through to larger
placemats. Suitable for children also.

Indian Kantha with Rebecca Cason
Use basic hand stitching to change the nature of fabric. Create your own
beautiful designs based on the meditative process of kantha stitching.
Your fabric can then be used to create a range of items only limited by
your imagination. This is a great opportunity to re- purpose thrifted
fabric or to bring new life to fabric scraps.

Paper Fans with Dyani Evans
Make a Chinese paper fan with patterned paper or decorate your own. In
China fans are used to cool down, swat insects and as a kung-fu weapon! A
breeze to make and a great kids activity.

Workshop Facilitators
Melanie Gray Augustin
lived in Japan for six years developing an obsession for all things
Japanese during that time. She is inspired by the culture, fabric and
paper and the way good design is used in everyday life in Japan.
Traditional and modern crafts come together in a happy clash in
Melanie's work influencing the designs she creates for her jewellery
label,
Kimono Reincarnate.
Liana Kabel
has been facilitating creative workshops for over 20 years, having
worked for Brisbane City Council, Education Queensland, Flying Arts and
in schools, galleries and hospitals. Liana attained a Certificate IV in
Training and Assessment from SBIT in 2013.
Tricia Smout
is a multi-media artist working with all types of textiles – fibre,
paper, yarn and fabric. She enjoys exploring the tactile qualities of
the materials and playing with textures and colour combinations. Tricia
has been teaching a wide variety of classes to adults and school
children for nearly 40 years.
Felicity Clarke
is a textile artist specialising in soft sculpture and mixed media. She
has a textile business and teaches in a variety of mediums with local
sewing shops, arts organisations and community craft groups. Felicity
exhibits her work regularly in Brisbane, Australia and overseas.
Rebecca Cason runs the Brisbane chapter of Brown Owls and small business
edward & lilly
handmade designs. Rebecca has over 5 years experience running workshops
across a range of crafts primarily textile based. Discussion around the
history, techniques and eco friendly variations of craft forms part of
Rebecca's workshops.
Gill Pyke makes origami creations for her label
Catamation and is a printmaker. She has extensive experience running workshops in origami for all levels from
children through to experienced.
Dyani Evans
is an eco-crafter creating notebooks, stationery, wearable art and
accessories, all made using recycled, salvaged and ethically-produced
materials for her brand
Little Deer Creations. Dyani runs workshops in recycled papermaking and paper crafts.
Jessica Thompson
was first introduced to crocheting by her grandmother at a very young
age. She is a master of free-form crochet work and working without a
pattern, creating her own complex patterns and designs for her label
Out of My Mind Crochet.
