Perth Meeting #2

Hidy-Ho fellow Brown Owlies....

Well we had our second meeting over here in Perth yesterday. We had it at a lovely little childrens wear store called BabyGoose in Inglewood which has a splendid area out of the back suitable for our meetings.

It was an intimate affair with 5 people attending, but a good laugh and chin wag was had by all. Crafts crafted this month included Nicole knitting socks, Kylie knitting baby booties, Jess attaching buttons to the most stunning bibs knitted by her Nana and Justine working on some felt slippers for her daughter. I finished of a set of Teletubby knitted teddies for my daughter. It seems with the cold weather coming we are all digging our knitting needles out!

Next month we will send out a reminder via email but please keep your eye on the blog.

Till next month

Brown Owls Brisbane March Meet

Brisbane Owlets met this morning for a good 3 hour session of stitching, eating and chatting. Our craft-a-long project for the day was embellished totes. Beautiful fabrics emerged from bags, patterns and books covered the table and the whirring of sewing machines filled the air...
... ok, ok, it wasn't all that peaceful especially when Em's chatty machine started competing with the gurgling sound of the air con :)

There was a hand stitching station,

a sewing and pressing area,

floor space for cutting

and lots of tote-a-long patterns and inspiration.

We don't have any totes to show off yet but we will keep you posted on the progress!

A big thank you to the owls who brought along home baked goodies, I think I ate them too quickly to photograph them but there were vegan mini carrot muffins, melting (and I mean melting!!) moments, chocolate slice, super crunchy cookies and dip and crackers.

Note to Brisbane Owls: the date for the next meeting has changed to Sunday 26 April, a post will go up to rsvp in the first week of the month.

Prefects are also looking into a group outing to the Stitches and Craft Show, we'll keep you posted! Suggestions for future meetings are always welcome, just leave a comment with your ideas.

Until the next meet up, Happy Crafting!

Canberra Brown Owls - a stitching tea party!

Hi Canberra Brown Owls!

Our next parliament of owls will be on Sunday March 22 from 2 pm to 4.30 pm, at the Downer Community Centre (enter from Frencham St, Downer). To cover the cost of the hall, we are asking for a $6 contribution per month. See the bottom of this post for the other Brown Owls dates!

The prefects have put their collective owly heads together and decided to hold a stitching tea party for our second meet! There will be tea and coffee and tasty treats, and stitching to be done.

Sublime Stitching hankies

Stitching hankies is a good place to start. We will have a heap of books and stitchery patterns for you to trace, or you can bring your own patterns from the internet or your home library! If you like, we can make up a kit for you for a few dollars (to be advised) with a blank lady's hankie, some embroidery floss and some needles. Just give me a week's notice so I can rustle something up for you.

Of course, you're not limited to hankies! You might like to bring along a blank pillowslip to stitch, or a shirt! We recommend stitching something white to start off with, though, as it's easier to trace! There will be a lightbox there for you to use.

Stitched pillowcase

Maybe you want to bring your own patterns along? Sublime Stitching patterns are great - you can either trace them or iron them on (great for the darker colours!), and you can order some online here or here. There are also a couple of online sites which offer free stitchery patterns. Do a google search to see what you can come up with!

So here's what you do -

  • Comment on this blog post to let us know you are coming and if you would like a kit made up for you
  • Bring a plate of teatime goodies to share if you would like to.
  • Bring a small embroidery hoop, a pencil, embroidery floss, embroidery needles and the thing you want to stitch, unless you would like a hankie kit! Bring your stitchery patterns too if you have them!
  • Bring change for your tea and coffee
  • Your kids are welcome of course! Bring some stuff for them to do, though. There is plenty of space for their crafting or activities, and a little area for running around outside.

We're looking forward to seeing all the lovely Canberra Brown Owls again!

Sydney Brown Owls - Ideas, anyone?

As self appointed "Miss Minutes" at Brown Owls meetings, I jotted down some things into my trusty little notepad throughout the course of the meeting.

Lisa has already outlined our meeting schedule for this year - if you have any issues with this, please comment as we can only change things if you say something!

The girls that were there on on Thursday night were chatting about what we'd like to do this year in Brown Owls. The idea of theme nights came up - there is so much lovely craft that we would like to try. Crocheting was the main craft that was mentioned on the night. Marion advised that maybe her mother-in-law, Shirley could come down and be our expert for a meeting or there are crochet classes available at places like Tapestry Craft that we could go to.

Image from here.

The idea of experts coming in and teaching us new tricks generated a lot of excitement. If you know of anyone that would like to come and teach us a new craft, comment away!

The thought of going on some excursions was also mentioned: Quilt Indulgence Festival, Stitches and Craft Show, markets, a Fabric Frolic - the possibilities are endless!

We were also chatting about bringing little things to do a swap in our meetings, that way you can show others what you can make and you can see what other girls can do!

All of these things are just ideas - do you have any ideas of what we can do? Remember, this is your group! So the more, the merrier. It really is only limited by our imagination (and organisation skills!)

Sydney Owls Had a Hoot!

The Sydney chapter of the Brown Owls met last night for the first time and we had a great night. Thanks to all of you who made it, and for those who didn't we look forward to meeting you next time.

We had 10 crafty girls at our meeting and we shared lots of laughs, craft ideas, tips and shops, and yummy food. Amy made the cutest owl button gifts for us all, and Jess baked up a sweet storm. Amy and Bell did a fantastic job putting together 21 're-stash a crafter' packs. And we all got creative.

Wednesday nights seem to suit everyone, so our plan for future meetings is to make it the first Wednesday of every month**, and we will rotate venues between Lower North Shore, Inner West, and Inner East. We will confirm venues as soon as we can. This is our plan at the moment:

1st April - Inner West
6th May - Inner East
3 June - Centre House, Lane Cove
1 July - Inner West
5 August - Inner East
2 September - Centre House, Lane Cove
7 October - Inner West
4 November - Inner East
2 December - Centre House, Lane Cove

**If you were unable to make it last night and Wednesdays don't suit you please let us know and we will work out some other day(s) that we can rotate.

We discussed the idea of having some guest crafters attend our meetings from time to time to teach us new skills. Suggestions were crochet, needle felting, and book binding. So we'll be working on getting that happening.

Our crafty librarian Jess took notes last night and will post about our plans in more detail later.

We can't wait for next month!

Sydney Brown Owls - tomorrow night

Hello Sydney Brown Owls!

We have emailed you all, but thought we'd repeat the info here - just in case.

We are very much looking forward to getting our group together tomorrow night for our craftalong - 7pm til 10pm.

The venue is:
Centre House
178 Longueville Rd
Lane Cove.

It's a brick house just past the traffic lights at the intersection of Austin Street.

If you're coming on public transport there are a lot of buses that go along Epping Road - get off at the intersection of Epping and Longueville and walk down past the shops. It's less than a 5 minute walk. The buses in the city leave from behind QVB at 'section C' bus stop. Make sure you get a bus that goes via the freeway. It will take about 15 minutes and your stop will be the first one after the freeway ends.

You can see the original post about our meeting, which includes a map, here.

Bring your craft project, or we'll have owl-themed kits available for $5.

The cost for this venue is $5 each. We'll discuss future venues tomorrow night - we're open to suggestions, so have a think about it in the meantime. We will be rotating the venues between east, west and north, and we'll also meet on a different weekday each month. That way we hope to be able to accommodate everyone.

Also, don't forget we'll have a "re-stash a crafter" table set up, so bring your donations along. More info about that here.

That's about it for now. We can't wait to meet you and get crafty!

Until tomorrow,

Jess, Bell, Amy & Lisa
Sydney Prefects

Brown Owls Perth

We had our very first meeting in Perth today at the Greens & Co Cafe. Here are some pictures that I manage to snap. You can see bigger photos on my Flickr Album

Thanks to Prefect Nicole and Prefect Jessica for putting Little Owlie Stuffies together. I had fun and I am sure the rest of the girls had fun to.
