Hi lovelies,
Brown Owls is happening again in Coota (that's Cootamundra for short!) next Tuesday evening.

Unfortunately I have nothing to report on from last month as my dear Pop passed away, so I was up North with family & we had to cancel the evening session. The day session was going to be run by my mother-in-law while I was on holidays but no one turned up (uh oh) so we've decided to just stick to the one session of an evening. Before starting the group a few people had expressed an interest in a day sessions but haven't made it so I guess that how things go sometimes & I'm happy with that as I can always go child-free for the evenings (thanks hubby!)

Here's the details:

Updated Meeting Dates and Times for 2011-2012

My apologies to all on the delay but I am finally posting the refreshed dates and times for the rest of the year and into 2012!

We have changed all our meetings to Sunday afternoon and will meet at Buzzbar in Mortdale (22 Morts Rd. Mortdale) for most meetings, with the exception of our Christmas meeting which we will have at the Hazelhurst Gallery (782 Kingsway, Gymea)!

Hobart Brown Owls - 1st gathering - success!

On Saturday, with much excitement, the Hobart Brown Owls opened the door to our clubhouse for the first time... Each securing a comfy spot and a cuppa, then getting on with the business of creating. Katy was spinning beautiful yarns to drool over, while Liz embroidered. Ny worked her jewellery magic and chatted to Sel. Chloe learnt to needle felt, then knitted and crocheted and Lis got her newborn knit on...

Around the table there was a beautiful afternoon tea spread to sustain the hungry crafters. Charlotte, Mel and Amy were there, with Amy's star piece of craftiness this year to date, the divine miss M...

Kate and Megan took a class in knitting under the skilled supervision of Sarah. They were knitting within minutes!

When all the tea was drunk and the craft was done (well a little of it), it was time to go. So, reluctantly, we shut the door and made plans for next month. The last Saturday of the month. Same time, same place. See you there? xx

a) crocheting some slippers (yes I know, crochet again - but i cant help it, i love it! and as you know I am very open to your suggestions if you'd like to do something else, do tell me do do). September Meeting

Our September meeting was just lovely with some new members joining regular Owls for chats, craft and delightful treats from Pearl Oyster. People had brought all kinds of projects.

This is Kathryn's first sweater project. The back is done and she was working on the front.

Aisha was crocheting a very sweet bear for eight week old Zoe asleep in the Hug-a-Bub and Elizabeth was knitting. She is working on a garter stitch square quilt with her Granma who lives interstate and posts squares to Elizabeth.

Shanaugh brought some tatting! Very tricky, very impressive! For those who are new to tatting, it is a lacemaking technique, done with very fine thread, a special type of shuttle and lots of tiny knots.

This is the book Shanaugh was working from. It makes us all want to tatt.

Nicola was getting the jump on Christmas with a spot of paper craft - wee gift bags.

Jodi was upcycling an old Hawaiian dress into a very chic summer skirt. Shield your eyes from its gorgeousness.

Canberra Brown Owls - crochet wrap-up

Today some of us learned to crochet!



We learned granny squares. (More info on granny squares here!)



And how to read a crochet pattern.



And how to frog your crochet when you've made a mistake.



How to talk and eat and drink tea at the same time as you crochet. (This is perhaps the most important crocheting skill of them all).



We also learned that it took Brown Owl Angie the equivalent of 4.2 days to crochet this colourful warm monster. Clever Angie!



I think there were 15 of us there today! Hooray for sunny September Saturdays! Our next Brown Owls will be October 22 and 19 November. Stay tuned to see what we have planned for you!

Hobart Brown Owls are Gathering!!

We thought it was about time Hobart had a Brown Owls group all of it's on... So, we have found a clubhouse and we are gathering! Soon! Yay! You can find us on Facebook here.

So, lets get organised...

Where: The old MCHN building, in the playground (yes, in it!), Batchelor Way, Taroona.
When: Every last Saturday of the month, starting from September 24th.
What time: 1.30 - 4.30pm, including time to set up and pack up.

What should you bring?
- Some crafty projects to work on. There is a small amount table of space for machine sewing, lots of space for hand work.
- A cup for drinking from. There will be tea, cows milk and sugar available. Feel free to bring a special drink along.
- A plate of afternoon tea to share. Gluten free options would be appreciated, but not essential.
- A little bit of money (about $4) for venue hire. The venue is quite cheap, so any surplus will be saved in a kitty to pay for weeks here attendance may be low. Lets see how we go...
- Children are ok to come if you need that option - the playground is right there and visible from the house, but this may be your special time away from owlets, which is perfectly great too :)

Adelaide Brown Owls - BYO night

It's that time again! Another BYO night for us rAdelaide folks as we wait for the chilly nights to lift and for people to start feeling like they want to leave the house again.  I do have a few workshop ideas that I'd like to run by everyone, but if you've got any suggestions (a burning ambition to learn Tunisian crochet for instance) then please let me know.

Canberra Brown Owls - Crochet on Saturday 17 September

Hello Canberra Brown Owls!

It's been a year since we did any crochet, so due to popular request we are doing it for the September 17 meeting from 2 - 4 pm.

I thought we might offer a couple of options for you - because some have never crocheted before, and some have crocheted a little but want to learn how to read a pattern.

So for beginners we will start you out by doing a granny square like this one, but perhaps less colours, just until you are comfortable.

Then for those who can crochet but want to learn how to read a pattern, you have two choices.

One is to download this pattern for the Urban Shells scarf from here. It's a free pattern, and so pretty. The pattern is in US terms, but I will teach you how to translate between British and US terms. It's very easy!

The other option is to find a pattern you've always wanted to make but had no idea how to start it. It might be a ripple rug, or a washcloth, or a lacy shawl! Just so long as it's not tunisian or broomstick lace we should be fine (that's not to say there won't be someone at Brown Owls who knows these things! It's just not me!)

For beginners:
* 8 ply (otherwise known as DK) yarn in one of a few colours. Wool is best - much nicer to crochet. But it's up to you!
* 4 mm, 4.5 mm or 5 mm hook - there will be some spares you can borrow on the day if you come up short.

For those wanting to make the urban shells scarf:
*A copy of the scarf pattern (linked above)
*300 m of DK/8 ply yarn
*4.5 mm hook

For those wanting to know how to make something from a pattern
*Your pattern of choice
*the supplies that pattern tells you to use.

As always, please bring $5 for the hall hire, a small plate of afternoon tea to share if you like, and any crochet projects you want to show and tell!

Here it is, time to drag our partly finished creations out of the mothballs and do some more creating. Now is also a good time to start some of those beautiful summer accessories.
All being well, Julie will be available to help with Temari, and I will be available to help with learn to knit and crochet. We have needles, hooks and yarn available, so you don't need to bring anything for that.

Brown Owls Melbourne 3000 - Raspberry Ripple night was great!

wow! we had a great night tonight, it was really raspberrily ripply brilliant. but i forgot to take photos - doh! So I will have to try and paint a picture of the evening in words.

So....
Stace, Anna, Sarah and Jen were the Ripplers, aided along by Pip's super ripple pattern which is just gorgeous, thanks Pip for all your fabulous generosities! Pip made a digital appearance via Skype which was super good, she was able to offer her wisdom in a vitual-techno-teacher kinda way. Hopefully next meet we'll have a ripple problem solving / work in progress catch up and if any Melbourne 3000'ers have any ripple questions why not post them on our facebook page, maybe Pip or another 3000'er will be able to lend a rippling hand. Claire will ripple at a later date, in the meantime, this evening, she indulged in some lovely red crochetness (washed down with some rather tasty looking berry punch).

Michelle and Caryn made pom poms, Caryn was wearing a great Nikki Gabriel garment which she'd knitted from pattern construction no. 3 - it was really very very nice, i believe the pom poms will be adorned to it soonish.

There was definitely some hook / needle envy for Yots' no. 10 crochet hook and Fiona's no. 10 knitting needles - supersizingtastic.

Chloe taught Mum Jan to crochet (isnt it great when you teach your parents really cool things), Jan bought her collection of knitted small animal creatures that were super cute, 'the whale' was the peoples favourite, personally i liked the little variegated octupus fellow wearing a skirt.

Shannon friendship braceleted and generally chatted a lot, Tess did some super stitching. Sian and Kate did knittings. Susie slippered, Claudia grannied and Eva accomplished stitch counting, petal making and produced a beautiful crochet flower.

Katie brought home-made cookies (yummy tasty treats) and generously gifted on some craft publications that just simply wouldnt fit on her bulging book shelves no longer - they went to good homes, they were much appreciated. And Gaby made Raspberry Ripple soap! yes its true she did! and we got to slice some off the big cakey looking soapy block with a crinkle cutter and take some home - lovely.

And me, I just wandered around a lot with my clipboard and had a nice nice time.

So that is how it was. Like I said, it was great. Thanks to all that made it so.

Haiti Says Thankyou to Sunshine Coast Brown Owls!

In July the Sunshine Coast Brown Owls sent some pillow case dresses off to Haiti with Dani, a friend of one of our members, Kim.

Well, Dani's back from her trip and has a bunch of photos of the girls wearing their pillow case dresses! How awesome is it to help out people in another country! These girls live in an orphanage, and getting beautiful dresses like this was a real blessing.

Brooch back if you have one, or a safety pin

IMPORTANT! It is a good idea to bring a piece of fabric no bigger than 5cm across with your name embroidered, or appliqued, or written in fabric marker, so we can get straight to the brooch-making and you don’t spend the evening doing the name and then not making the brooch. Why not come along this Wednesday the 7^th of September to embroider your name?

We may not get a whole brooch made in a couple of hours but you can always bring it along next time, and our trusty helpers will give you a hand if you need it.

This is a free event, but Hannakin’s special creations will be available on the night for purchase, so bring your pretty pennies if you wish to purchase some hannakin loveliness.
