Yes Folks! tomorrow is FootscrayBrown Owls born to knit event. We are looking for crafty crafters with a couple of hours spare tomorrow to join us in our knit fest for a very good cause. Whats that? I hear you say you'd love to come but you are stuck with the kids? I say BRING EM!!!! The Happy River Cafe would have to be one of the most kid friendly parental stressfree cafes happening in Melba. So there really are no excuses to pop along and say hello and knit up a storm. So check out the details below.......

This months meeting of brown owlers will be participation in the save the children 'born to knit' campaign and we are extending an invitation to ALL Brown Owls across the nation to participate in our event.

BORN TO KNIT

Save the Children want to knit 15,000 blankets & need our help!

Our blankets could help save a life. Its a fact that tragically, 8.1 million children under the age of five die every year from illness.

A blanket will help a child stay warm and feel comfy and safe. Most importantly, a blanket can help ward against pneumonia, one of the biggest killers of children under five in the developing world.

So please one and all come and join the Footscray Brown Owls in a knitfest of an afternoon to knit a square or two.

Requirements

You are asked to donate or bring your own yarn I have a small stash which Im willing to donate and would welcome for the event any donations of unwanted wool that meet the guidelines below. Im also thinking that recycled clean wool from a jumper etc should be fine also as long as it meets guidelines.

So bring your size 4 needles, your good cheer and enough for a cuppa and join us in this worthy cause.

Save the children have more details on their site.

But I have posted their guidelines below.

Guidelines for knitting your blanket:

  • Please use 4mm needles
  • Please use 8ply 100% pure wool
  • A perfect-sized blanket is made up of 16 knitted squares
  • Each square should be about 20cms x 20cms (44 stitches wide, 88 rows high)
  • The final blanket size should be around 80cms x 80cms

Details of Event

DATE: Saturday, 30th of July
TIME: 2-5 pm

LOCATION: Happy Footscray River Cafe Gardens (weather permitting)
Footscray Community Art Centre
45 Moreland St Footscray

If you can give an indication if you are attending that would be really helpful.

Cheers Helen :)

PS: we dont need to sew the blankets we just need to knit the squares so even if you arent a knitter please feel free to pop along and say hello relax with some other crafty project and have a cup of coffee or a glass of sparkles..........

Dresses for Haiti!

At the beginning of the month the Sunshine Coast Brown Owls got together to make pillow case dresses for Haiti!

It was a lovely afternoon, and our dresses are being sent off to Haiti now to clothe some beautiful children! Kim was our fearless leader this week, and she showed everyone how to make these dresses!

Our next Sunshine Coast meetup will be on the 13th August, 2-4pm (place to be confirmed). We'll all just be focusing on our own projects, so just bring along whatever you're working on. I'll also be seeing who's interesting in doing a mixed media weekend workshop, so keep your eyes our for more info on here about that!

Email Talia at talia.carbis (@) gmail.com or Text 0410 400 366 for more info!

For now we'll leave you with some photo of our July's pillow case dress fun! All photo credited to Erin from Reskew'd.

New Brown Owls: Cootamundra

Hi there lovely people,
I'm Katie Lowe & I'm starting a Brown Owls group in Cootamundra. Ok so for those of you who have no idea where Cootamundra is, it's on the South West Slopes in the Riverina area aka country NSW, 90kms from Wagga Wagga.
Anywhoo I don't know how many people from the area know of Brown Owls but I hope to change that soon. We will be having a day session and an evening session both once a month to suit those who work of a day & those who prefer to craft in the day.

We're lucky enough to have a free venue at the library so I'm thinking of a gold coin to cover refreshments & any photocopying templates etc. Does that sound reasonable? Thinking the first few sessions will be BYO project & then work out how & what we will do for projects after that. As I said I'm totally new to this so would love any advice you all may have.

Here's the details:

Where: Stephen Ward rooms at the library Wallendoon St, Coota.
When:
Evening sessions: 1st Tuesday of the month 6-8pm
Day sessions: 1st Thursday of the month 1-3pm

Commencing 2 & 4th August- First session BYO craft project- FREE
Refreshments: Tea/coffee & a cake or other yummy treat will be supplied
RSVP: Ph Katie: 0401 741 631 OR
Comment here OR on the
Brown Owls Cootamundra Facebook Page

Cheers, Katie.

:: Brown Owls Recipe E-Book!

We are going to publish a Brown Owls E-Book! YES!  If you head over the Facebook group, you can pick up the link and add your recipe!  If you are not a member over there, just join and I will add you! Or someone else will add you! Because there are many owls popping in over there!

SO.  We are ironing out the nuts and bolts of our Recipe Book E-Book, but we think it would be good if we sold it online for a small amount and all funds raised went to a charity.  I think a Pet Rescue group would be a great idea, don't you? These groups really fight for funding.  Maybe we could help?!  Not only do they save animals from being euthanised, they get them the (expensive) medical help and grooming they need, they make sure they feel loved and secure, they provide any behavioural training necessary and then they foster them into wonderful temporary homes where they wait to be adopted by nice people like US!  Phew! That's a lot of good stuff, right?

Anyhoo.  That is the (very loose) plan.  Why don't you help?!  Go grab the link and start adding your recipes!

xx Pip

Canberra Brown Owls 30 July - scrabble tile pendants

Hello lovely Owls,

Brrrrr, I hope you’re all keeping toasty warm in this wintery weather! Our next meet is approaching – Saturday 30 July – so here are some details for you. I’m a bit excited about this one!

We’re going to give scrabble tile pendants a go this month. Aren't they pretty? There are quite a few tutorials on the web (I’ll link to several at the end of this post), and of course an image search will throw up dozens of examples.

from makes and takes

Because you need a few specialist supplies and only a little bit of them, we’ll provide kits for those who want them this month. For $5 you will get the makings of 3 pendants: wooden tiles, bails (the little bit that makes them into a pendant) or brooch pins, glue and glaze.

You will need to provide the image you want to put on the tile – either paper or fabric. Remember that your tile is only 1.5 cm square, so look for an image or pattern that will fit on the tile to give the look you want. A chance to hit the scrapbooking paper stand!

Now, the glaze takes around 48 hours to dry properly, so you will need to bring a small container to transport your drying tiles home in – a takeaway container, for example.

Please rsvp in the comments, and tell us if you need a kit so we can make sure we have enough supplies. As usual, there is a $5 fee to cover the hall hire, and please bring a plate to share for afternoon tea.

So to recap:

Saturday 30 July, 2pm – 4pm

$5 for hall hire & bring a plate

$5 for kit – please mention in rsvp

Paper or fabrics for your pendant image

A small container to transport them home in

RSVP in the comments!

We do hope to see you there!

Bron, Naomi, Michelle and George xox

Have a look at some tutes here, and here, and here and here.
