MITCHAM BROWN OWLS

Hi Owlies,

This month, the very talented Denise Avery, Textile Artist extraordinaire, is going to give a workshop on making Kansashi flowers.
Here is what you need to bring:

Materials needed for each flower:
1 x piece of cotton fabric 15 x 30 cm, cut into 8 x 7.5 cm squares. Cotton is easier to use than synthetic fabric as it will hold creases easily without ironing. A firm plain weave quilting or dress fabric (
with a bit of substance but not too heavy or fine) with a small to medium overall print is good. Some quilting fabrics are a bit thick (e.g. homespun), and some dress fabrics a bit flimsy (e.g. voiles). A medium weight tightly woven silk that doesn't fray too much is good too. If anyone wants to bring an old tie to repurpose I can show them how to cut it. They should be unpicked and washed if possible; silk ties are good (although not all labelled silk are silk I've found). Wide ties are best as they should have enough fabric - I've found narrower ties hard to get enough squares from to make a 7.5cm flower, although a smaller one would be possible. Fiddly though for a first time.
8 x paper clips, small bulldog clips, pegs or sewing pins (to hold each petal while you're making the rest)
1 x small piece of felt (for the back of the flower)
1 x brooch pin (I can supply metal
double clips - brooch and alligator for hair or garment wear for $1.50 each that the flowers can be hot glued onto; or plain stitch-on brooch backs for 30 cents each)
1 x
button (for the centre of the flower)
Hand sewing needle/s
Thread (ordinary polyester sewing thread) in a colour to match the fabric
Scissors

If you would rather, Denise can supply a kit for $4, but you will need to let me know so she will know how many to bring.

You might like to bring your own projects to continue with, and there is always knitting and crochet support available.

I'll look forward to seeing you.

The details:

Where - Gallery One, 1 Torrens Road Mitcham PH: 0431 297 258
When - Saturday July 25th from 1.30 until 4.00 pm
Cost $7, room hire, and if kits are pre ordered, $4.

Tuesday 9 June, 6:30-9pm
The Nest, 720 South Pine Road, Everton Park

Re-discover the traditional craft of 17th century covered button making to create fabric brooches or buttons. The technique used is definitely for lovers of 100% handmade, no glues or quick-assemble tools allowed at this meet up, it’s all about slowing down and valuing the time and skills of completely hand-stitching your brooch.

After you've mastered the basic technique you can go on to create more with embroidered designs or embellishments! Bring along some little designs if you'd like to include embroidery.

Changes afoot in KYNETON BROWN OWLS

Well my dears, we have changes afoot!

Due to a number of reasons our Kyneton Brown Owls evening
is changing it’s day from Thursday to WEDNESDAY.

From the 13th May, we’ll be hanging out in the gallery space at the Royal George Hotel on Piper Street from 7pm.

We will still be meeting fortnightly and the rest of the years dates are below if you wish to pop them into the diary.

There won’t be any more Locals Night dinner deals as on a Thursday, but there will still be deelish food and a range of beverages to choose from.
We will no longer meet on a Thursday.

It’s been pretty marvellous meeting up with you all, and it will be terribly sad to see the talented Jess move to warmer climes. She’s been a strong support of our crafty evening and it will be sad to see her and her kin head north. We hope it’s sunny when they get there!

I’ll be bringing some tissue paper along and making some paper pom-poms if you’re interested this Wednesday, our next meet being the 13th May.

Did that message get through? I know I’m being repetitive! But if you do turn up on Thursday, Lucinda and Chris our hosts at the George will be very welcoming anyway!

Big chunky knits to you,
Stacy

Sunshine Coast Brown Owls

Hello Everyone,

Due to our extreme cyclone Maria weather, our February meeting was canceled for safety reasons.

Our March meeting has just been arranged.

We are going to try our hand at Wire Baskets.

21st March, 2015
10:00am
A Little Creative Studio
6 Taylor Ave, Golden Beach, QLD 4551

:Cost:
$4.00 for a bag of recycled wire
$5.00 for the class cost

Please also bring Gardening gloves, some eye protection if you like and some pairs of wire cutting pliers if you have them - more than one pair if possible. Markers if you want it to be neat. If you want a different look or have wire to hand, bring that along instead - as long as it's strong enough to support itself (you can twist wire together to make a thicker strand) and is soft enough to bend it by hand with a minor assist from pliers for tight bends. Some thinner wire can be great for accents or variety in the weave. Glass beads (make sure they fit on the wire) can be nice too. There are some beads left over from another class, and you are more than welcome to use these, although they might not fit the gauge of your wire.

We welcome everyone at our meeting, even if you are not wishing to work of the selected craft, but are bringing your own. Don't forget to mark yourself as attending on our Facebook page.

See you there!

Christine
