Helloooo Canberra owls!
Thanks to everyone who has already gotten back to us to let us know you would like to stay on the mailing list!
And thanks to everyone for your patience while we finalised our meeting dates.
I'm very excited to let you know we do have our 2013 bookings confirmed.
We will be meeting from 2pm until 4:30pm on the 4th Saturday of each month, at the Downer Community Centre
This means that our very first meeting for 2013 will be held next Saturday 23rd February at 2pm
Please bring along what ever crafty piece you have on the go, and join us for a cuppa and a chat.
We love show and tell, so please also bring along anything you've finished or are working on and would like to show (off) =)
Please also remember to bring $5 for room hire, and something to share for arvo tea if you would like!
It would be wonderful if RSVP in the comments so that we know how many owls to expect.
If anyone hasn't had the chance to let me know that you would like to stay on our mailing list for 2013 please do - future emails about our meetings will be sent to our updated list, and we would hate to miss anyone!
As in previous years, we will continue to put the details of our meetings on the Brown Owls members blog.
Hope to see you next weekend!

Please join us at our very first Parramatta Brown Owls gathering to serve Sydney's western suburbs!
Where: Mars Hill Cafe, 331 Church Street, Parramatta NSW
When: Saturday, February 23 at 1030 am

BYO project and feel free to enjoy the sublime drinks and foods at Mars Hill Cafe.
Mars Hill Cafe is a delightful locally owned cafe dedicated to providing space for artists, musicians, writer's groups and much more. They are very excited to hear crafters and artisans are interested in meeting there. They have a meeting room upstairs as well as a performance space, but until we get established and decide what we need, we'll just grab a table or two inside or out on the sidewalk cafe for now.
You don't have to be a professional or running a business. If you love to make things, would like to learn how, or want to network your budding or already successful crafting venture, please come.
There is no fee to meet at the cafe although you might like to purchase one of their fine hot or iced coffee drinks or pot of tea and a pastry or breakfast.

Brown Owls Launceston - Blanket Squares for the Tassie Fires
Happy New Year Launceston Owls!
As we are all aware, there have been some devastating fires around our beautiful state this year. If you are free on Saturday the 9th February, come and get your yarn on to make some crochet or knitted squares. All squares will be donated to those that have been affected by the fires and made into blankets by members of The Craft Hive (Hobart). It would be lovely if you could donate the yarn you will be using.
Please RSVP here in the comments section or on the Brown Owls Launceston Facebook page so that we have an idea of numbers.
We will be meeting from 10.30am at The Tea Room café at the QVMAG Art Gallery.
When: Saturday 9th February 2013
Where: The Tea Room
Address: QVMAG Art Gallery, 2 Wellington Street, Launceston
Time: 10:30am to 12:30pm
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Brisbane: Get your knots on for macramé!
It's time for our first meet up of the year and we're kicking it off with a fun craft suitable for all levels! Learn the basics of the square knot and you'll be whipping up plant holders and accessories in no time!
Image from minieco
Where: Carindale Library, Westfield Carindale, 1151 Creek Road, Carindale
What to bring:
Scissors
Rope, cord or yarn depending on what you would like to make (see notes below)
Metal ring for the top of the plant hanger (the rings from key rings are perfect and can be found at Reverse Garbage).
Beads, washers, shells or anything with a hole through the middle to add to your macramé bracelet.
A clipboard isn't essential but if you have one at home bring it along, it makes for an excellent board to hold your macramé in place while you tie knots.
RSVP: As soon as possible by emailing brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com
For plant hangers:
There are lots of materials you can use to make your plant hangers, have a think about whether you would like your hanger to be indoors or outdoors, this will guide the type of rope or cord you use. For example a good cord for outdoors may be a polypropylene or cotton rope about 6mm thickness whereas a natural plant based fibre like jute may not last outdoors for as long. Hemp on the other hand is much stronger and suitable for outdoor use. Check out your local hardware store or even better Reverse Garbage!
For indoor use you could use any type of cord or rope as long as it can take the weight of the plant, think outside the square about different types of yarns, recycled fabric or bring an old t-shirt along and make t-shirt yarn.
Keep an eye on the Brown Owls Facebook page closer to the time for more suggestions or follow this Pinterest page.
NB: The amount of cord or rope to bring will depend on the size you would like your plant hanger to be. If you're not sure drop me a line at brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com and we can have a chat about it (bearing in mind that I'm travelling at the moment so Internet is few and far between but I will respond as soon as possible).
For macramé bracelets:
Hemp or cotton cord is probably the easiest to work with on your first go but you may also like to bring along some old fabric to upcycle into a cute bracelet, ribbon, embroidery thread for the super patient or any other type of thin cord.
Bring along some beads, washers for a 'metal' look, shells, or anything with a hole through the middle to thread on while your knotting the bracelet. Check out Reverse Garbage for some unique up cycled options.
See you then!

Brown Owls Perth (Bayswater) 2013 Update
Firstly, sorry for not regularly updating you all on what has been happening in WA! It is tricky to make sure every information source is updated properly for each so I thought I would do one big post on our group for 2013 nice and early...
Anyone who is interested in coming along to our Perth-based group might like to join our Facebook group . We have found the events calendar on here very useful and its also a handy space to ask questions and show-off what you might be working on!
We are also on Instagram - #brownowlsperth
BROWN OWLS PERTH FAQs
Venue
Meeting Room at the Bayswater Family Centre - corner of Murray and Crowther streets, Bayswater. This facility is used by other hirers too but we always stick a sign on the door for the meeting room!
Dates
Our meetings are always held on the third Sunday of each month. Dates for up-coming meetings are:
20 January 2013
17 February 2013
17 March 2013
21 April 2013
19 May 2013
16 June 2013
21 July 2013
18 August 2013
15 September 2013
20 October 2013
17 November 2013
15 December 2013
Time
Meetings start at 2pm and finish at about 4pm.
Format
We are a pretty casual group and mostly we run BYO craft meetings. Most people coming along find it easier to just bring something they're working on - it also gives people a chance to work on slow-burn projects that they wouldn't normally get to at home! We have knitters, crocheters, embroiders, cross-stitchers, hand quilters and we get a fair bit of paper-based crafts too.
Every now and then we will have someone from the group run a small workshop on something that they're particularly good at. We have had crochet, knitting, pattern-making and mosaic meetings before - but those meetings are quite flexible in that there are often people working on their own things as well.
Cost
We don't have a membership fee but we do ask for a gold coin donation to help with venue hire.
Anything else I should bring?
Sometimes members will bring a plate or packet of something yummy to share but there is no obligation or scheduled food roster. Everybody leads busy lives and we don't want to add another commitment. If you would like to bring something along it will be welcomed but if not, no matter!
Do I need to tell anyone I am coming?
Nope! You can just turn-up. If you want to check-in or have questions, feel free to email - shodgson(at)westnet(dot)com(dot)au or silverthreadsofhappiness(at)gmail(dot)com
