Brisbane Owls tackle crochet

Everyone succeeded with their first steps! In no time crochet wash cloths were beginning to form all thanks to our fabulous teacher Sam.

For those who missed out, fear not! There will be one of us on hand at the meet ups to go through the crochet motions with you. And for those who mastered the wash cloth, beanies are planned for the coming months!

What's going on up in the North?

The Finnish Brown Owls report about the past two months. February's theme was learning a new skill, tatting. The beginning wasn't too encouraging, but after the idea had matured some time, the secret was revealed:

I hope to show a small finished project some time this year.

In March the Brownie activity was sewing. The Charity of the Month was Unicef, and I made two dolls for adoption. Because I also gave the dolls as birthday presents to blogging friends, I paid the adoption fee to Unicef, securing two real children the necessary 6 vaccinations to save their lives.

April's charity project is the Chemo Cap Campaign spreading rapidly all over Finland. I started crocheting and knitting in the last week of March, and yesterday I mailed these 7 caps to the local campaign office:

Being a single Brown Owl in this country makes it a bit lonely business, but following the blog posts of you other owls down there on the other side of the world inspires me. If I had a group here, I would definitely include tea and biscuits to the meetings. It would be lovely to chat while working! Should any one of you happen to visit Helsinki some time, we could arrange a meeting as I'm only 50 km away. Just let me know!

Brisbane Owls: RSVP for Crochet!

Brisbane Owls: It's time to RSVP for our next meet up!

Date: Sunday 18 April

Time: 10:30am - 12:30pm

Venue: Recreation Room in Building 7 of Roma Street Parklands Apartments, Parkland Blvd, Brisbane. The Rec Room is on the ground floor of building 7. Building 7 is the end apartment block furthest away from the City.

Craft-along Project: Crochet

Sam will be leading the Crochet Project this month with washcloths, perfect for beginners before we move on to the more challenging granny squares and beanies in the coming months.

Bring a new size 4.5/old size 7 crochet hook and some 8ply crochet cotton (Lincraft usually has a good supply of this for cheap) or yarn of choice, just make sure it's washable so you can suds it up and enjoy the end result! We will have a limited supply of crochet hooks and yarn available too.

Please leave a comment to let us know if you will be taking part in the project.

OR BYO craft to work on.

Tea and coffee provided. Feel free to show off your baking skills by bringing a plate for morning tea :)

Please RSVP by leaving a comment on this post by this Thursday 15 April or email brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com.

See you then!

St George and Sutherland Brown Owls Meeting This Tuesday Night - 13th April 2010

And the winner is....
Crochet

Image from The Purl Bee
We will be having a crochet night! But feel free to bring any craft along as we will have access to a sewing machine, over locker, light box and other craftiness.
I will have some how-to handouts to help with the crochet and hopefully a few crochet smart people to lend a hand.
My personal goal is to make a granny square!
If you are up for the crochet bring along some yarn and a crochet hook - I find that the Salvos and Vinnies are great suppliers of cheap crochet hooks and yarn if you are in need!
I look forward to see you there....for more details and to RSVP head over to HERE

Relocating owl seeks crafty types

Hello there,

I'm on a mission... and I'm hoping a few of you friendly folk can help me on my way.
You see, I'm a Brown Owl of the Melbourne variety, but this weekend I will be moving to the rural/coastal town of Geelong (Victoria).

I'm wondering if you happen to know any nice crafty people from the Geelong/ Surf Coast region, who might be interested in meeting up for some creative collaboration, and maybe even starting our own chapter?

For that matter, do you have any tips on good craft sources, cafes, places to visit in the area?

I'm a 23 year old speech pathologist, and I love upcycling, granny squaring, paper craft, and bits and pieces of everything else...

I would appreciate any local tips you might have to share, email contacts for crafty folk, or maybe you could pass on my email to anyone who might be interested.

Please send all replies to:
warbleandtrill@gmail.com

Wish me luck on my big adventure!

Happy crafting in 2010 Brown Owls

Sydney Owls Meeting This Wednesday

Hello Lovely Sydney Owls

We have a meeting on this Wednesday. All owls are welcome - even if you are new come along and join the fun.

Details:
Wednesday 7th April 7pm - 10pm
Lane Cove Centrehouse, Longueville Rd Lane Cove
Cost $5 each for the room rental. Also bring a coffee mug if you want a cuppa.
we are in a new room this week - the pottery room which is down the side underneath our normal room.

This time we are exploring the world of "ephemera"
According to Wikipedia Ephemera is transitory written and printed matter not intended to be retained or preserved.
If the word ephemera scares you or is a pain to spell just think of it as "collage with old stuff".

Everyone should bring a base item to do their collage on like plain notebooks, kraft envelopes, a blank canvas. We should also bring supplies to share (so we don't need to double up too much) including some sort of glue, maybe thread and needle for sewing on lace or hand embellishing, scissors, cuttting tools, rubber stamps, etc...

Then we need some "old materials" - people are bringing things like old sheet music and national geographic magazines that we cut up and share. Other ideas would be interesting paper, postcards, pamphlets, tickets, maps and lace or interesting fabrics.

this should be fun - see you there!!!!

Mitcham Brown Owls

For the month of April, we are making our own Owl.

This little fellow is blanket stitched felt, and can be glued or sewn onto anything you like.

If you don't want to make our little owl, you can bring your own projects, or we will also be available to teach knitting and crochet.

We are looking at offering sewing lessons for making clothes, (this is for complete beginners, and we are hoping to have a couple of sewing machines available). This would be on a Tuesday night, but not part of our regular Brown Owl nights, so if you are interested please let us know and we will add you to the list.

Now for the details:

When : Tuesday 13th April, 7 - 9.30 PM

Where: Gallery One, 1 Torrens Street Mitcham, PH 8271 4504

Need to bring: If doing our workshop, or wanting to learn knitting or crochet, nothing, otherwise, bring your own project.

Cost: Once of member ship to Brown Owls - $10.

Gallery One fee - $4.

Owl Kit - $2.

Please RSVP so we can make up kits for you.
