Pretty Pin-Cushions for Pretty Sweet Peeps!

Brunswick Brown Owls make

Pretty Pin-Cushions with CASEY

The delightful CASEY, a Brunswick Brown Owl who is a master quilt maker (hand sewn, oh my goodness) and collector of gorgeous fabrics (and also works in the head office of an extremely large fabric and haberdashery and homewares franchise in Australia!) will be taking us through a workshop this Wednesday 29th February at 7pm at the Sporting Club, Weston St., Brunswick, Victoria.

You will need:

1. Scraps of fabric in about 7 different designs

2. Template plastic

3. Sharp scissors

4. Needle

5. Thread

6. Embroidery thread to contrast with fabric

7. Hobby fill

8. Self cover button, approx. 2.5cm diameter

Welcome if you haven’t made it to the Brunswick Brown Owls for 2012! If you can’t make it, we’ll pop up photos (just like that of Casey's quilt below) of the evening on our Brunswick Brown Owls facebook page so you can watch the fun too. We have almost 100 members, and you can be a part of our crafty community too! Come along with some friends and learn some new skills with us!

The Sporting Club still has delicious tapas (4 for the price of 3, bargain!) and they even have discount price cocktails! Bonza! What a night!

Brown Owls Melbourne 3000, March Gathering ~ Bunnies and Books

Hi!

So...... as we'll not be meeting again before Easter we decided to bring Easter just a leetle bit forward and get into BUNNY mode! Maybe you have a young 'un amongst you who would like to receive a Bunny for Easter and so this March meet will have you started in good time.

My all time favourite bunny pattern can be found here:
http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60480A.html

The rabbit in the pic above is made, with a bit of adaptation, from this pattern. Her name is Betsy, she now belongs to Milly and she is riding 'bunny on bunny' stylee a jelly mould that was once lent to me by the lovely Pip Lincolne, in order to make a rabbit jelly for my boyfriend for his Christmas 2009 present, when I was aghast to find out he had never eaten such a thing - ever. Anyway.... I digress.....

Feel free to share your bunny pattern in the RSVP's below too. As you will all know by now, crochet is my thing, but I'm sure you will have amongst you a treasure trove resource of bunny patterns for stitch, knit, hook, paper/glue/stick, macrame, etc etc etc - so lets share.

It was also suggested that it would be fun to exchange BOOK ideas, so how about you all bring your favourite craft related book along for others to have a look at, which should give us a veritable library of crafty inspirational wonderousness. (Lee - I'm looking forward to seeing that Vintage Knitting book!).

when: Tuesday 6th March 2012
at: 6.30 - 9pm
where: The Parlour, Madame Brussels, level 3, 59-63 Bourke St, Melbourne 3000
bring: BYO project of your choice (bunny themed if you like or not if you dont like) + your favourite craft book
cost: no fee for attendance but you may like to purchase a drink or a delight from the Madame Brussels menu, by way of a thankyou for room usage
RSVP: in the comments section below please - indicating your name eg. Sue H

It was lovely to see some new faces at February's gathering, so very hope to see you all again for March meet.

Sue x

Brown Owls Melbourne 3000, a few dates for you

Hi!

Just thought I'd let you know a few dates ~ of the next few Melb 3000 meets, so you can pop them in your diary and be sure to be able to come along, cos it will be super lovely to see you.

Tuesday 6th March
Tuesday 29th May
Tuesday 26th June
Tuesday 24th July

No gathering in April as Madame Brussels are super full, due to hosting some of the Comedy Festival.

Gatherings are held in the fabulous Parlour Room (its great!) at Madame Brussels, Level 3, 59 Bourke Street, Melbourne 3000.

We meet from 6.30 - 9pm.

There is no attendance fee, though you might like to buy a beverage or a delicious foody treat from Madame Brussels, as way of thank you for them allowing us to use their super Parlour Room, which is reserved just for us.

It is an open group, open to all Brown Owls (new and existing) and their friends. I post about each gathering a week or so before its happening and ask that you RSVP to that post to indicate your attendance.

Its mostly a free for all BYO kinda thing. We dont organise tutorials, but I'm happy to help co-ordinate a session if you'd like to run one ~ let me know! Sometimes we have themes - like 'Raspberry Ripple', 'Slipper Night', 'Movember in December'.

It's a very easy, relaxed gathering and super friendly. People come and go, its lovely to see familiar faces and we particularly like seeing newbies, so dont be shy, come along!

Look forward to seeing you soon

x

Canberra February felty FIESTA!

Hello patient Canberra owly friends!
Your prefects are excited to announce that we have the details for our February meeting all locked in!
We're still in the process of finally having our dates and venues for this year secured, so this month we are on the road again!

We'll be meeting at 2pm this Saturday 18 February at Tilley's in Lyneham for a February felty FIESTA!

We love working with felt - it is easy to cut and sew, which makes it super portable and it comes in loads of colours - what's not to love?!

We won't have 'kits' as such, but there will be some felt available for you to buy from us in half or quarter sheets, but we can't guarantee how much or which colours - if you have something in particular in mind it might be safest to bring it along yourself =)
It is available from loads of places including art and craft shops, and both Hobby Sew in Belconnen and Addicted to Fabric carry some lovely all wool felt if either of those are in your neck of the woods.

So now what to make?!
There are LOADS of really ace tutorials out there for crafting with felt - you can make anything from play food to jewellery to super cute sewing accessories.

To help you out we've put together a list of some of our favourites from around the www!

Accessories for you!

Remember the gorgeous brooch Naomi whipped up at our January get together?
You can make your own using this tutorial

And here's a super cute owl ornament (but ace brooch too!)

Cupcake brooch (not a tute, just a pic)
Raincloud brooch (we LOVE this!)
Robot brooch
Another owl
Heart and kisses
And a whole lot more brooches and pins!

Bits and pieces for your sewing box!

A strawberry needle book
A flower pincushion
A watch pincushion!
Hedgehog pincushion

Gear for your gadgets!
 ipod/iphone/other gadget covers

Groundhog!
Sheep!
Monogram!

Other cute stuff!

Here's a really cute felt owl mobile pattern (second one down)
A forest of felt hearts

(sideways!) Strawberries!
There are loads of tutorials around for felt food - check out these ones George has collected on her pinterest board

Phew! It's going to be tough to choose!

Now - the important things to remember!

Our felty FIESTA is happening at 2pm this Saturday 18 February at Tilley's in Lyneham!

You need to bring:
felt - remember we'll have some available for you to buy, or you can bring along your own
a copy of your tutorial if you need to refer to it for instructions
a needle and thread if there's sewing involved
other things that might be handy are scissors, a pencil and paper if you need to draw a template, toy stuffing if your felt needs to get stuffed (hehe)

And if you're not feeling the felt we'd still love to have you along! Bring your latest crafty project to work on, or just join us for some cake and a chat!
Ooh and don't forget we love show and tell too! If you have any new shiny books/mags/finished projects to show off us we'd be very excited to see them!

Please let us know in the comments if you'll be able to make it - that way we can make sure we've booked for the right numbers! =)
And if you have any questions please get in touch with a comment below (make sure we have your details so we can get back to you!)  or an email!

Looking forward to seeing lots of you on Saturday!

Love Bron, Naomi, and George! xo

Image from http://lolpetpics.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/happy-owl-1.jpg

Your prefects have been working hard behind the scenes to get dates finalised for our meetings in 2012, however we’re having some problems confirming things with the new bookings officer at our venue. At this stage we are still planning to go ahead with the meeting planned for Saturday 18 February from 2-4pm – but we will confirm the location when we’ve locked it in. Please keep us pencilled in your diaries and we’ll be in touch soon! And as always we love new owls so drop us a line if you want to be kept in the loop.

Time: 10:30am - 12:30pm

Venue: Meeting Room, New Farm Library, 135 Sydney Street, New Farm.

Craft-along Project: Crochet Washcloths and Granny Squares

Crochet Washcloths for Beginners

Sam holds the record of being able to teach anyone to crochet in under 2 hours so if you've never picked up a crochet hook before and have always wanted to this is your chance to kick off your crochet addiction with a sweet little washcloth.

Bring a new size 4.5 or old size 7 crochet hook and some 8ply crochet cotton (Lincraft usually has a good supply of this for cheap) or yarn of choice, just make sure it's washable so you can suds it up and enjoy the end result! We will have a limited supply of crochet hooks and yarn available if you prefer to practice first before investing in your own yarn and hook.

Crochet Granny Squares

Already know the basics of crochet but yet to master the infamous granny square? Rebecca will guide you through a basic granny square, once you get the hang of it you won't believe how easy it is!

Bring the yarn of your choice and crochet hook to suit your yarn, you can work in one colour or as many colours as you like. Check the label on your yarn for the hook size required. If you're not sure ask your local craft store or email us at brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com. We will have a limited supply of crochet hooks and yarn available if you prefer to practice first before investing in your own yarn and hook.

First completed granny square

Please leave a comment to let us know if you will be taking part in the project.

OR you can also BYO craft to work on.

Tea and coffee provided. Feel free to show off your baking skills by bringing a plate for morning tea :)

Please RSVP by leaving a comment on this post by this Thursday 23rd February or email brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com. If you do need access to a crochet hook on the day please let us know when you rsvp :)
