Canberra Brown Owls - Next Meeting 23 May

The next Canberra Brown Owls meet is Saturday 23rd May and this month we're all about the pincushion.

We've emailed members a selection of some of the millions of tutes on the net - including the wonderful Kootoyoo's hand-sewn pincushion tute in the sidebar over there...

You'll need your own fabric or felt, and some needles and ribbons or notions. You'd be best off choosing something hand sewn, although we'll have a sewing machine there for some basic seams. We'll also have an iron and ironing board.

The meeting is on Saturday 23rd May - 2 pm to 4.30 pm, at the Downer Community Centre (enter from Frencham St, Downer). To cover the cost of the hall, we are asking for a $6 contribution.

As with last month, here's what to do:

• Comment on the blog post to let us know you are coming
• Bring a plate of teatime goodies to share if you would like to
• Bring your supplies for stitching
• Bring change for your tea and coffee
• Bring your brooch from last month for show and tell!

Your kids are welcome of course! Bring some stuff for them to do, though. There is plenty of space for their crafting or activities, and a little area for running around outside.

The June meeting will be Saturday 27th June. After that we will back to Sunday meets.

April Canberra Meet - felt brooches

Hello lovely Canberra Owls,

Our next meet-up is fast approaching - Saturday April 18th from 2 pm to 4.30 pm, at the Downer Community Centre (enter from Frencham St, Downer). To cover the cost of the hall, we are asking for a $6 contribution per month.

This month we though we might work on some bling for ourselves. Hand-sewn felt brooches are on the agenda!

We prefects have been scouring the web, and have come up with a short-list of fun and funky online tutes for you to choose from. Natch, if you have one of your own you'd like to make, please do!

You should have recieved an email with more deets (links and such), but if you haven't please contact one of the Prefects by email or in the comments.

As with last month, here's what to do:

A stitch in time...

A stitch in time saves at least nine lovely owls from an ordinary afternoon! Sunday-week-ago the Canberra Brown Owls met at their new base, the Downer Community Centre, to do a spot of stitching, eating and chatting.


Our project this month was embroidery and so we traced and ironed and stitched to the soothing tones of the children's tribal drum group in the room next door. It was lovely to meet a few new owls and get a feel for who does what crafts, and what activities we might like to do in the coming months.

Our owls certainly showed their culinary talents too - a whole table full of delicious delights including chocolate brown owls!!

Looking forward to some felt crafts this month; details to come!

Canberra Brown Owls - a stitching tea party!

Hi Canberra Brown Owls!

Our next parliament of owls will be on Sunday March 22 from 2 pm to 4.30 pm, at the Downer Community Centre (enter from Frencham St, Downer). To cover the cost of the hall, we are asking for a $6 contribution per month. See the bottom of this post for the other Brown Owls dates!

The prefects have put their collective owly heads together and decided to hold a stitching tea party for our second meet! There will be tea and coffee and tasty treats, and stitching to be done.

Stitching hankies is a good place to start. We will have a heap of books and stitchery patterns for you to trace, or you can bring your own patterns from the internet or your home library! If you like, we can make up a kit for you for a few dollars (to be advised) with a blank lady's hankie, some embroidery floss and some needles. Just give me a week's notice so I can rustle something up for you.

Of course, you're not limited to hankies! You might like to bring along a blank pillowslip to stitch, or a shirt! We recommend stitching something white to start off with, though, as it's easier to trace! There will be a lightbox there for you to use.

Maybe you want to bring your own patterns along? Sublime Stitching patterns are great - you can either trace them or iron them on (great for the darker colours!), and you can order some online here or here. There are also a couple of online sites which offer free stitchery patterns. Do a google search to see what you can come up with!

So here's what you do -

• Bring a plate of teatime goodies to share if you would like to.
• Bring a small embroidery hoop, a pencil, embroidery floss, embroidery needles and the thing you want to stitch, unless you would like a hankie kit! Bring your stitchery patterns too if you have them!
• Bring change for your tea and coffee
• Your kids are welcome of course! Bring some stuff for them to do, though. There is plenty of space for their crafting or activities, and a little area for running around outside.
