Cootamundra Brown Owls September Meet

We had a great first month at Cootamundra Brown Owls. We had only four people at each session but as it's only early days and didn't have much publicity happening, I think that was pretty good.

We had cake and lots of crafting and chatting.

Dorothy & Robyn crocheting
We had people crocheting, appliqueing, beading & card making, what fun! Silly me forgot to take photos until the last minute so I only have one of these two lovely ladies at the evening session.

Next month:
Day session: Thursday 1st September 1-3pm Stephen Ward Rooms, Cootamundra library. I will be away for this session & my mother-in-law (above right) has kindly agreed to "host" for me, so go & say hi to her!

Evening session: Tuesday 6th September 6-8pm Stephen Ward Rooms, Cootamundra library.

Tea/Coffee/Hot choc & cake or other yummies will be supplied.
Both sessions will be BYO project but I can put together either an easy card making kit or easy beading kit for you & lend you my tools if you don't have something to work on. Please RSVP & state what session & what kit you'd like.
FREE.

Yes Folks! tomorrow is FootscrayBrown Owls born to knit event. We are looking for crafty crafters with a couple of hours spare tomorrow to join us in our knit fest for a very good cause. Whats that? I hear you say you'd love to come but you are stuck with the kids? I say BRING EM!!!! The Happy River Cafe would have to be one of the most kid friendly parental stressfree cafes happening in Melba. So there really are no excuses to pop along and say hello and knit up a storm. So check out the details below.......

This months meeting of brown owlers will be participation in the save the children 'born to knit' campaign and we are extending an invitation to ALL Brown Owls across the nation to participate in our event.

BORN TO KNIT

Save the Children want to knit 15,000 blankets & need our help!

Our blankets could help save a life. Its a fact that tragically, 8.1 million children under the age of five die every year from illness.

A blanket will help a child stay warm and feel comfy and safe. Most importantly, a blanket can help ward against pneumonia, one of the biggest killers of children under five in the developing world.

So please one and all come and join the Footscray Brown Owls in a knitfest of an afternoon to knit a square or two.

Requirements

You are asked to donate or bring your own yarn I have a small stash which Im willing to donate and would welcome for the event any donations of unwanted wool that meet the guidelines below. Im also thinking that recycled clean wool from a jumper etc should be fine also as long as it meets guidelines.

So bring your size 4 needles, your good cheer and enough for a cuppa and join us in this worthy cause.

Save the children have more details on their site.

But I have posted their guidelines below.

Guidelines for knitting your blanket:

  • Please use 4mm needles
  • Please use 8ply 100% pure wool
  • A perfect-sized blanket is made up of 16 knitted squares
  • Each square should be about 20cms x 20cms (44 stitches wide, 88 rows high)
  • The final blanket size should be around 80cms x 80cms

Details of Event

DATE: Saturday, 30th of July
TIME: 2-5 pm

LOCATION: Happy Footscray River Cafe Gardens (weather permitting)
Footscray Community Art Centre
45 Moreland St Footscray

If you can give an indication if you are attending that would be really helpful.

Cheers Helen :)

PS: we dont need to sew the blankets we just need to knit the squares so even if you arent a knitter please feel free to pop along and say hello relax with some other crafty project and have a cup of coffee or a glass of sparkles..........

New Brown Owls: Cootamundra

Hi there lovely people,
I'm Katie Lowe & I'm starting a Brown Owls group in Cootamundra. Ok so for those of you who have no idea where Cootamundra is, it's on the South West Slopes in the Riverina area aka country NSW, 90kms from Wagga Wagga.
Anywhoo I don't know how many people from the area know of Brown Owls but I hope to change that soon. We will be having a day session and an evening session both once a month to suit those who work of a day & those who prefer to craft in the day.

We're lucky enough to have a free venue at the library so I'm thinking of a gold coin to cover refreshments & any photocopying templates etc. Does that sound reasonable? Thinking the first few sessions will be BYO project & then work out how & what we will do for projects after that. As I said I'm totally new to this so would love any advice you all may have.

Here's the details:

Where: Stephen Ward rooms at the library Wallendoon St, Coota.
When:
Evening sessions: 1st Tuesday of the month 6-8pm
Day sessions: 1st Thursday of the month 1-3pm

Commencing 2 & 4th August- First session BYO craft project- FREE
Refreshments: Tea/coffee & a cake or other yummy treat will be supplied
RSVP: Ph Katie: 0401 741 631 OR
Comment here OR on the
Brown Owls Cootamundra Facebook Page

Cheers, Katie.

New Tasmania Brown Owl Group

Dearest Brown Owls I am calling out to YOU yes you ,

I am extremely interested in making a Brown Owl group on the north west coast of Tasmania, I am located in Latrobe and am just putting out feelers to see if there are many people interested in attending a group in this area before I start to organise anything.
If you are interested and not close to area that the meeting might be, being held in  that need not matter we can have a changing roster so that it meets everyones needs who is interested.
I personally think that this is a tremendous opportunity to get a new group started and spread those hidden talents and learn some new ones !

Hope to here from all you owlets

Canberra Brown Owls - 2010 meet & greet!

Hi Brown Owls!

Yesterday the Canberra Brown Owls got together for a meet and greet to kick off a new crafty year. It was lovely to see some familiar faces from last year, and super nice to see nearly as many new faces as well!

The theme this month was BYO craft, and I think it might just be my favourite theme to have - it is so inspiring to see all the wonderful things our clever Owls are making! =)

There were some very owly crafts, like these sock owls which were made from a Craft Schmaft owl kit

and this gorgeous jumper, which has little owls knitted around the collar!

We love granny squares (look at that quilt in the bottom picture too! pretty!)

and dollies!

Oooh, and just look at this birdy embroidery (birdbroidery? =))

It is the very first stitchy project by a brand new to embroidery Owl! And its so cute!! =)

Thanks so much for a fabulous afternoon, Canberra Owls!
We are VERY excited to start planning for our March meeting, which will be held on Sunday March 21, and we will be in touch with all the details soon!

xo Bron, Michelle, Georgie & Naomi! =)

Canberra BYO

Hello Canberra owls!

Eeeek, what happened to October???
It's already time for our next crafty get-together!

Our next meeting will be THIS Sunday October 25 from 2 pm, at the Downer Community Centre (enter from Frencham St, Downer).

We had such a blast seeing what our clever owls get up to in their own crafty time, that we are BYO-crafting again this month, so, you should bring along what ever you fancy!

In case you're stuck for Crafty Inspiration, here are links to five of our favourite cute projects that have popped up on craftzine and whip-up lately:

fabric butterfly
corner bookmark
button & wire brooch
jewelled t-shirt
pinwheel pin

You should also bring $6 for room hire, and, if you would like, something to share for afternoon tea =D

And don't forget - if there's something from a previous meeting that you've finished at home we'd love to see it too! =D

Please RSVP in the comments, and pop any questions you have there too!

Ooh, and next month the lovely Michelle is going to show us how to applique!

I'm also delighted to say that persistence in putting out an invite to the world to join us has actually paid off - at last, someone IS actually in the Mongolian neighbourhood and we have a couple of Finnish people joining us! Read more here. How good!
Thank you, Brown Owl of Finland!

Canberra Brown Owls - 23 August

Freezing? Well come along to the next Canberra Brown Owls meet on Sunday 23 August, where we'll be tackling freezer paper stencils!

Charger

You'll need to bring:

  • a photocopy/printout of a design you want to stencil,
  • something you want to stencil on to (t-shirt, tea towel, fabric),
  • a pencil for tracing the design on to the freezer paper,
  • an exacto or paper cutting knife, and
  • a plastic lid or some kind of paint palette
  • $6 for the room hire.

For the princely sum of $3 we can provide you with a 50cm length of freezer paper, and access to fabric medium, paint (black, white, red, blue and yellow) and brushes. If you're a quilter you may already have access to your own freezer paper, or you can bring your own paints. You can buy a piece of freezer paper for $1, or some fabric medium (turns regular paint into fabric paint) for $1. Let me know if the comments if you want a the 'package' or just freezer paper.

Here are some great places to start looking for a stencil or for a bit of information about the process. Best to try something simple to start with.

There was loads to show and tell including these cute guys Emma made from the Softies book. The orange ant eater softie is her own design, we hope to see more of them!

We all clucked over this little family Sandra brought along, their beautiful little faces were created with teeny tiny embroidery stitches.

Amy got straight to work on Miss Buttons, loving the choice of fabric!

Sam powered through a pile of Bloomin' Buttonhead Brooches.

Thanks ladies for the monthly fix of crafty fun!

*** For our August or September meeting Katy has offered (ok, we talked her into it) to give a Yudu Screen Printing demonstration. If you are interested in seeing how the Yudu works leave a comment to let us know. To read more about the Yudu, check out Katy's blog. ***

Tu-whit Tu-whooo! Launceston Brown Owls is Go!

Well, what a hootin' great start to Brown Owls on the island!

More than 20 lovely ladies came together last night for our very first cosy evening of crafty goodness. Everyone brought their own projects - from Buffy-inspired handiwork to Jane Austen style embroidery, beautiful softies, clever quilts, funky pot-holders and even gosh-darned tricky granny squares were attacked. The tea and conversation flowed and it was worth coming, if just for the delicious tasty treats laid on by the ladies. (Thanks for the T2 tea Suze - it was lush!)

Thanks so much to Gabbi for providing such a warm welcoming venue on a cold island night, as well as bubbles and the most precious gift packs for all of us.

Thanks most of all to you wonderful new Launny Brown Owls who came along and shared the crafty love.

There is plenty more to come so stay tuned for details of our next Brown Owls craft-in.

Sydney Owl's Second Meeting: Crochet

The Sydney Owls met last week for our second get together. We had a great space surrounded by books in the upstairs area of Burkelouw Books in Leichhardt.

Corrie was very patient teaching the beginners as we all busied ourselves with crochet projects. Some Owls were already quite skilled with their hooks and some of us struggled to produce a granny square! As expected we all had a great time and enjoyed each other's company.

Thanks to our Sydney members for making our get togethers a success and something we all look forward to.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 6th may. Stay tuned for details.
